Leading Change for Women in

Engineering & Technology
Tunis, Tunisia–
On June 6 – 8, 2007, the inaugural international colloquium on “Empowering Women in Engineering and Technology” will set out with the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), the Center for Women and Information Technology at UMBC (CWIT), UNESCO and many other industry stakeholders to: discuss ongoing initiatives on gender, engineering and ICT; raise awareness on gender-related barriers to engineering and ICT access; include women as leaders and decision-makers; and support local solutions and content.

Raise Awareness on a Global Scale

The goal of this extraordinary new colloquium is to increase the worldwide participation and leadership of women engineers within WFEO and both the engineering and technology professions.

“We want to establish a solid foundation of global support for women already working in these fields and those interested in becoming the engineering, technology and science professionals of tomorrow,” states Kamel Ayadi, president of WFEO and lead colloquium host.

The colloquium will host over 50 well-known speakers and 500 participants representing over 90 different countries.

The result – a unique collaborative effort from well-respected industry leaders and internationally renowned keynote speakers such as:

  • Karima Bounerma Ben Soltane, Director, UN Economic Commission for Africa
  • Johanna Levelt Sengers, Scientist emeritus – US National Institute of Standards & Technology, Co-Chair for the InterAcademy Council report on Women for Science
  • Ellen Sauerbrey, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State

WFEO provides information and leadership to the engineering profession on issues of concern to the public or to the profession.

NetSquared, a conference and opportunity provided by Compumentor and TechSoup, is where we have been spending the week. Linda Alepin, Founding Director of GWLN, and Sem Basol, of the GWLN Leadership Team, were joined by Loretta Donovan, serving as Project Champion, to share our story. NetSquared has been an amazing venue for testing proof of concept against three key criteria: sustainability, economics, and technology.
